Salt Field in Marakkanam

Source of basic spice, common salt is an essential for preparing  food .No one can imagine our daily food without most basic spice in food, salt and sugar. In fact, salt pot has to be ready on table before eating food.

Salt is a vital resource of our country. India is the third largest salt producing country in the world. Gujarat stands first position producing salt  in our country and then Tamil Nadu. Marakkanam salt field in Dindivanam district, is one of the famous salt fields in Tamil Nadu. It is situated near by East Coast Road.

Here, salt is produced using bore well water and sea water .This area has a lot of underground saline water. Workers reach here at early morning and returns after the noon. They work here for ten months of a year. In the raining season salt is washed away. In India more than 15,0000 workers are involved in this field. They work in scorching sun to extract salt in the field. Do we know the effort of salt workers for producing salt under harsh and scorching environment?
